Data Copy - Glossary

Words, words, words.

Here’s a quick rundown on the most common paper and environmental terms you’re likely to find on your travels. If you think something that’s missing, email us at info@datacopy.com.

Age Resistance

If you want to ferret away documents your paper has to be up to the job. Age resisting papers use special pulps and processes so they stay fresh as a daisy - while we go grey and wrinkly.
top

Biodegradable

A substance that decomposes as the result of activity by bacteria and other living organisms. Paper products are biodegradable.
top

Bleaching

No, we’re not talking about toilet cleaning: this is taking away or changing the coloured bits in paper pulp to improve whiteness and brightness. (N.B. Not really recommended for unsightly facial hair.)
top

ColorLok® Technology

ColorLok® Technology is a more advanced standard for better print results. It can deliver more vivid colours, bolder blacks, faster drying time and overall superior results. Data Copy Everyday Printing and Colour Printing papers are made to the ColorLok® standard. These papers will be available in the summer.
top

ECF

Take a deep breath: this refers to ‘Elementary Chlorine Free’ (phew). It covers a bleaching process used to make pulp, and means no “hardcore” chlorine is used.
top

Emissions

Gases, particles, and materials released or emitted into the environment often due to combustion or burning of a fuel. We try to reduce them.
top

Environmental Audit

Quite often, we open ourselves up to a really in-depth look by clever, totally independent experts, who make sure we’re meeting green regulations and policies. They’re nice people, really, but rest assured they take no prisoners!
top

Environmental Policy

This lays down what we want to achieve and gives us something to aim for in our green activities. The Environmental Audit (above) is a great check on how we’re doing.
top

Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international non-profit organisation that sets rules for forestry management and gives certification to forest operators that meet its standards. Products with FSC label are produced using wood from sustainably managed forests.
top

Formation

Get your magnifying glasses out: there’s no better sight that the even distribution of fibres in a sheet of paper! Actually, there is, but top paper-people reckon “good formation” like this is a handy indicator of excellent paper performance.
top

Fossil Fuel

We need to be very careful with remaining stocks of non-renewable energy sources, like coal, petroleum and natural gas. Energy-awareness and conservation are the name of the game.
top

ISO 14001

This really, really important (and prestigious) international environmental standard makes sure people like us (a) stick to the rules and (b) make constant improvements in how we tackle green issues.
top

Manufacturer Brand

Paper brand that is owned and controlled by the paper maker. Guarantees consistent supply and quality, making sure customers receive the same paper and quality in every box. Just like Data Copy!
top

Moisture

Lots of moisture is really important in many situations – use your imagination. Not so with paper. If paper’s too damp, it’s going to curl. And curling inside a printer or copier can cause jams, misfeeds and tantrums. Unlucky.
top

Multi-functional Devices

These nifty bits of kit combine printers, copiers, faxes and scanners into a single device, for both colour and black-and-white. Makes your life easier eh?
top

Multi-functional Papers

They work on any office printing technology – inkjet, laser, colour, black-and-white. Simple isn’t it?
top

Opacity

Ah, the glint of rosy dawn light through a fine sheet of paper… opacity is simply about how much light shines through paper. You need a lot of opacity when you’re using a paper for duplex printing or for heavy-duty colour printing on one side of the sheet.
top

Papers from OEMs

Papers sold under office equipment manufacturer brands. These papers are usually made by a variety of paper manufacturers.
top

Private Label Papers

Products sold under merchant and reseller brands. These papers are usually supplied by different manufacturers.
top

Product Lifecycle

The product life cycle begins when raw materials are extracted from the earth and ends when the materials from the products are reused, recycled, recovered or discarded.
top

Programme for Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC)

The PEFC Council is a non-governmental international body that also promotes sustainable managed forests, with an umbrella scheme that recognises national programmes.
top

Recyclable

Describes a product that can be recycled after its end use to produce another useful product. Paper products are recyclable.
top

Renewable Resources

A natural resource that is replenished by natural processes at a rate comparable to its rate of consumption by users. Sustainably managed wood is considered a renewable resource.
top

Resolution

Not just for New Year: this means the amount of detail that can be reproduced in dpi (or dots per inch). The higher the resolution, the better the result. As opposed to New Year, where the loftier the resolution, the more difficult it is to get a result.
top

Smoothness

The sensuous feel of a sleek sheet… smoothness is pretty crucial to making sure toner sticks correctly, and to prevent misfeeds and the dreaded paper jam. Pick up some paper, and the first thing you pick up on is its smoothness. Umm.
top

Stiffness

The right, err, stiffness is very important to make sure paper feeds in and through machines properly, helping take the sheets on their merry way through complicated cogs and paths.
top

Sustainable Development

The need to meet current demands for economic growth, competitiveness and employment, without sacrificing the sustainable management of resources and protection of the environment for future generations.
top

Sustainable Forest Management

A forest management system that balances social, economic and environmental issues that ensures a healthy future for forests.
top

TCF

Like, Totally Chlorine Free, man! This goes back to our old friend, the bleaching process used on pulp. It means the additives used have - you guessed it - no chlorine involved.
top

Thickness

No, this doesn’t refer to the hapless person who has no idea how to control a printer or copier. Paper thickness is important when it comes to things like stiffness and feeding. A bulky paper is one with high thickness – important properties.
top

Virgin Fibre

Pure, unadulterated, fresh wood fibre – never before used to make pulp, paper or board. Best treated gently and responsibly by a caring partner.
top

Whiteness and Brightness

In the hands of a sensitive user, such properties are the lifeblood of a paper, defining its look and attraction. In less highfaluting terms, white n’ bright has a clear impact on the contrast of your print output.
top

Wood-free Paper

Hmm, let’s think about this: oh yes, this is paper made without wood. Or rather, made using chemical pulps only.
